Conference Dynamical Systems, Difference and Functional Equations

Biography of Professor Marek Cezary Zdun

Marek C. Zdun

Marek Cezary Zdun was born on 20 July 1948 in Katowice, Poland. His father was a lawyer and his mother was a history teacher. He is married, with two children.

Zdun spent the first 33 years of his life in Katowice, were he recieived all his education. Since his initial technical interests from the school years had turned into a passion for mathematics, in 1966 he started studying mathematics at the Katowice branch of the Jagiellonian University in Kraków. There he met Professor Marek Kuczma, who fascinated Zdun by his personality and unmatched power of the mind, and who became Zdun's teacher and scientific mentor. This influenced the choice of scientific specialty by Zdun, which became functional equations (he has remained true to this day to this subject matter).

The first Zdun's works were devoted to functional equations in one variable. He graduated from the University of Silesia in Katowice in 1971 and received his PhD from the same university in 1974, supervised by Professor Marek Kuczma. After completing his PhD, Zdun began to deal with the iteration theory, which includes topics related to dynamical systems and functional equations. His habilitation, which he received in 1980 at the University of Silesia, was based on the dissertation "Continuous and differentiable iteration semigroups". Zdun's fascination for the iteration theory was inspired by Professor György Targonski, with whom he collaborated successfully for a long time. Zdun has been still trying to implement and promote Targonski's scientific ideas, among other things, as the chairman of the scientific committee of the series of European Conferences on Iteration Theory. In 1997 Marek Cezary Zdun received a title of a professor of mathematics.

Professor Zdun has been employed at the Pedagogical University of Cracow since 1985, however his professional career began in 1971 at the University of Silesia in Katowice, where he held positions until 1983. Moreover, it the years 1981-1985 he worked at the Bielsko-Biała branch of the Lodz University of Technology. Professor Zdun has been the head of a chair in the Institute of Mathematics of the Pedagogical University of Cracow since 1993, in the years 2002-2008 he was also the dean of the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Technical Science of this university.

Professor Zdun has been leading Seminar on Iteration Theory since 1989. He supervised three PhD dissertations, one of his students has already received his habilitation. Professor Zdun gave about 80 talks at conferences all over the world, his research stays include, among others, Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz (Austria), Philipps-Universität Marburg (Germany) and Sichuan University (China). He is a member of the International Society of Difference Equations, the American Mathematical Society and the Polish Mathematical Society.

Professor Zdun published 70 papers, 2 of them were awarded in Józef Marcinkiewicz's competition for the best university students' paper in mathematics and 12 in Marek Kuczma's competition for the best Polish paper on functional equations and related topics.

Professor Zdun was honoured with the Gold Cross of Merit and the Knight's Cross of the Order Polonia Restituta, he also got three times the Prize of the Minister of Higher Education.
